Benefits of Outdoor Education
"It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves."
— Sir Edmund Hillary
The Transformative Power of Mountains: Why They Are Nature's Greatest Classroom
For thousands of years, mountains have inspired explorers, philosophers, scientists, and educators. They have been places of pilgrimage, challenge, reflection, and discovery. Today, research is increasingly confirming what many cultures have understood for centuries: time spent in mountainous natural environments has profound benefits for our physical health, mental wellbeing, personal development, and relationships. TIME
At Far and Wide, we believe the mountains are more than spectacular landscapes. They are our greatest teachers. Every ridge, river, forest, and summit presents opportunities to learn about ourselves, those around us, and our place in the natural world.
Why Mountains Are Different
Mountains demand something of us.
Unlike urban environments, they cannot be controlled or hurried. Weather changes unexpectedly. Paths become steep. Rivers must be crossed. Success depends not on technology or comfort but on preparation, teamwork, resilience, and good judgement.
In the mountains, distractions disappear. Mobile phones lose signal, social pressures fade, and participants become fully present. The mind begins to focus on what truly matters: solving problems, supporting others, making decisions, and appreciating the natural world.
This combination of challenge and beauty creates an ideal environment for deep learning.
1. Mountains Reduce Stress and Improve Mental Wellbeing
One of the most consistently reported benefits of spending time in nature is its positive effect on mental health.
Research shows that natural environments help reduce stress, improve mood, increase mindfulness, and enhance overall psychological wellbeing. Even relatively short periods in nature can lower feelings of anxiety while increasing life satisfaction and emotional resilience. ScienceDirect
Mountain environments are particularly powerful because they combine:
-
physical activity
-
fresh air
-
expansive views
-
reduced noise
-
fewer distractions
-
opportunities for reflection
Together these create an environment where people can reset mentally and emotionally.
2. Mountains Build Resilience
Life is rarely comfortable in the mountains.
It rains.
It gets cold.
The climb is steeper than expected.
People become tired.
Plans change.
These challenges are precisely why mountains are such effective teachers.
Research consistently shows that outdoor adventure education improves resilience, confidence, perseverance, emotional regulation, and self-belief by exposing participants to manageable challenges supported by skilled leaders. PubMed
Participants learn an important lesson:
Discomfort is temporary. Growth is lasting.
3. Mountains Build Confidence Through Achievement
Confidence cannot be given.
It must be earned.
Every hill climbed...
Every river crossed...
Every difficult decision made...
Every fear overcome...
adds another layer of genuine self-confidence.
Unlike praise received in a classroom, mountain achievements are tangible and memorable.
Research shows that successfully completing outdoor challenges significantly improves self-efficacy—the belief that "I can do difficult things." This confidence often transfers into school, work, sport, and everyday life. ScienceDirect
4. Mountains Create Better Leaders
Leadership is rarely developed in lecture theatres.
It develops when people must:
-
solve problems
-
make decisions
-
support others
-
communicate clearly
-
remain calm under pressure
The mountains provide these opportunities naturally.
Outdoor education creates situations where leadership becomes authentic rather than theoretical.
Participants learn that good leaders are not always the loudest.
Often they are:
-
the best listeners
-
the calmest thinkers
-
the most dependable teammates
-
the people who encourage others to succeed
5. Mountains Build Stronger Teams
Shared challenge creates shared identity.
There is a reason military units, expedition teams, rescue organisations, and elite sporting groups spend time training in demanding environments.
When people face genuine challenges together, trust develops naturally.
Research on outdoor adventure programmes with employees found improvements in psychological capital—including hope, optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy—as well as stronger teamwork, shared accomplishment, and wellbeing. ScienceDirect
A mountain cannot be negotiated through status or hierarchy.
It rewards cooperation.
6. Mountains Develop Better Decision-Makers
Every journey requires decisions.
Should we continue?
Should we turn back?
Who needs support?
How do we cross safely?
These experiences teach critical thinking under real conditions.
Unlike hypothetical classroom scenarios, mountain decisions have genuine consequences, encouraging participants to think carefully, communicate effectively, and accept responsibility.
7. Mountains Foster Environmental Stewardship
People protect what they value.
People value what they know.
The mountains provide direct experiences that create emotional connections with nature.
Research consistently shows that outdoor learning strengthens environmental awareness, appreciation, and pro-environmental attitudes far more effectively than classroom learning alone. Frontiers
When participants witness a sunrise over a mountain valley, hear the silence of an indigenous forest, or drink from a crystal-clear stream, conservation becomes personal rather than abstract.
Applying These Benefits to Outdoor Education
Outdoor education is not simply about taking learning outside.
It is about using carefully designed experiences to create lasting personal growth.
The mountain becomes a classroom where:
-
teamwork replaces competition
-
experience replaces theory
-
reflection deepens understanding
-
challenge develops character
A steep climb becomes a lesson in perseverance.
A river crossing becomes a lesson in trust.
Navigation becomes a lesson in leadership.
Preparing meals becomes a lesson in responsibility.
Every experience has meaning beyond the activity itself.
This is why experiential learning is so powerful—it transforms experiences into life lessons.
Applying These Benefits to Team Building
Many traditional team-building activities are enjoyable but quickly forgotten.
Mountain-based team development is different because it involves genuine interdependence.
Groups must:
-
communicate effectively
-
solve complex problems
-
adapt to changing conditions
-
manage risk
-
support weaker members
-
celebrate shared success
These experiences build trust that carries back into schools, workplaces, and communities.
Participants return not simply having completed activities, but with a deeper understanding of one another and of how successful teams function under pressure.
Why the Mountains Matter
The mountains ask nothing of us except that we arrive with humility, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
They remind us that progress comes one step at a time.
They teach patience when the climb is long.
Perspective when life feels overwhelming.
Courage when the path is uncertain.
Compassion when someone else is struggling.
And gratitude when we reach the summit together.
For nearly four decades, these mountains have been Far and Wide's greatest classroom. Here, adventure becomes education, challenge becomes opportunity, and every journey becomes a lesson in resilience, leadership, teamwork, and character.
Because the greatest summit we ever reach is not a mountain—it is discovering who we are capable of becoming.

Our Story
For more than 39 years, Far and Wide Zimbabwe has been inspiring people to discover more about themselves, each other, and the world around them. Today, we are Zimbabwe's longest-established and most recognised name in experiential outdoor learning, leadership development, and adventure education.
Founded by Bernie and Julie Cragg, Far and Wide began with a simple yet powerful belief: that the mountains are some of life's greatest classrooms. What started as a passion for adventure has grown into a world-class outdoor learning centre where thousands of people—students, educators, leaders, families, and corporate teams—have been challenged, inspired, and transformed.
Our programmes are built on the principle that meaningful learning happens through experience. Whether developing leadership, strengthening teams, fostering environmental stewardship, or building resilience, every challenge is designed to help people grow with confidence, purpose, and perspective.
At our Mountain Centre in the heart of Nyanga, our Wall of Memories tells the story of thousands of journeys. It is a reminder that every great achievement begins with a single step and that small moments of courage, perseverance, and teamwork can shape lives and create lasting impact.
Today, Far and Wide continues to welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to experience one of Africa's premier outdoor learning destinations. Here, surrounded by mountains, rivers, forests, and waterfalls, adventure becomes a catalyst for personal growth, meaningful connection, and lifelong memories.
